In studying traditional sketching methods, it is hard to create a refined style of portraiture. I recall Kenkichi Tomimoto, who was in his hometown of Ando Village at the time, who complimented me on the face of a plaster bust by Voltaire that I’d sketched with charcoal. This self-portrait drawn with hard pastel has a similar tone, and it is shown here as an example of artwork from my younger days.
